Shared Care with General Practitioners Program

The Shared Care with General Practitioners program (commonly known as GP Shared Care, Mental Health Shared Care or MHSC) has been operating since 2007, providing almost $20 million in funding for 38 Mental Health clinicians across the state to deliver essential services to adults with Tier 3 mental illness conditions to keep them well in the South Australian community. Tier 3 are individuals experiencing low prevalence, severe, high complexity disorders including (but not limited to) schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, bipolar affective disorder, severe depression and anxiety and personality disorders.
Within the Target Group the Service Providers will give the following sub-groups priority access to the services.

  1. Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander population
  2. Culturally & linguistically diverse population.

The program has been administered by General Practice SA under contract with SA Health, and service delivery is provided through six contracted Service Providers throughout the metropolitan and regional areas of South Australia.

We are servicing over 16,000 Occasions of Service each year.

Most of our Service Providers also service the ATAPS program (Allied Psychological Services) which is Commonwealth Government funded.  Clients in the ATAPS program are quantified as Tier 1 and Tier 2 (mental healthcare for people with mild to moderate mental disorders, people of all ages, including children who meet the program’s eligibility criteria).

General Practice SA is pleased to announce that the Shared Care program is funded and will continue until June 2018.
